Nepal judge orders detention of Charles Sobhraj

Kathmandu, Oct 17: A judge on Friday allowed police to detain infamous criminal Charles Sobhraj on charges of murdering Canadian and American backpackers almost three decades ago. The judge directed that Sobhraj be released from custody in a fake passport case, but accepted the police plea over the murder investigation.

Police in the Himalayan kingdom wanted to question Sobhraj, a French citizen, for the 1975 murders of the two backpackers. He has been detained since last month on a charge of entering the country on a fake passport 28 years ago. Sobhraj, born to an Indian father and Vietnamese mother, has been living in France since he was released from an Indian jail in 1997 after serving 20 years for a string of crimes, including murder and robbery, often involving tourists. In 1975, Thailand issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of drugging and killing six girls, all wearing bikinis, on a beach at Pattaya. But he was jailed in India before he could stand trial on those charges. Police said they were collecting evidence and expect to lay murder charges against the 59-year-old dubbed the "bikini killer" and "The Serpent".
