Nepal king opens temple on Buddha Jayanti

Kathmandu, May 16: King Gyanendra inaugurated a renovated Mayadevi Temple in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti on Friday. Hundreds of people, including foreign tourists, visited the temple and offered prayers. The renovated temple is expected to attract millions of Buddhists from all over the world. The renovation was long awaited after the discovery of the Marker Stone from the old structure by the Nepal-Japan joint excavation team in 1992. It had been reportedly placed by Emperor Ashoka to denote Lord Buddha's first step on the earth. However, even after the excavation, Mayadevi Temple could not be rebuilt for over a decade. The reconstruction started two years ago at a cost of Rs 6.3 crore. Buddhists the world over celebrate the day as "Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Purnima" (Full Moon Day).
